5th March 1995 - Dudley Town 0 Yeltz 10 (Ten)

IT’S 55 SINCE 55!!

Today, 5th March 2010, is the anniversary of a significant event in the history of Halesowen Town Football Club. Playing away on 5th March 1955 in the Birmingham League Southern Division, The Yeltz recorded their biggest ever League win when they trounced Dudley Town by 10 goals to nil.
This game is also significant for the 7 goals scored by our centre-forward, Ronnie Dugmore, as this remains the highest number of goals scored by a Yeltz player in one match.
Ronnie arrived at The Grove on a free transfer from Wolves in the mid 1950’s and soon became a regular top scorer. His full Yeltz record is not completely known but twice he scored 5 times in a game and 4 times netted 4 goals, his total is currently recorded at 197 goals in 255 games. It is always difficult to compare players from different eras but Ronnie can claim to have a Yeltz goalscoring record as good as any.

The Yeltz line-up that day was:

Anderson, Basterfield, Lashford, Sims, Jones, Watton, Barker, Dugmore (7), Hadlington (2), Meaney, Mynard (1).

The report from the Sports Argus is set out below:

Midway through the second half, spectators began to leave the Sports Centre – a good illustration of how low spirit is here. Halesowen’s success was comfortable enough but had the home side shown little more determination in the early stages, the score would never have reached these proportions.

Halesowen gained a snappy two goal lead but were lucky to do so. A display of Dudley aggressiveness could easily have reduced this lead. As it was, the Dudley defence, never really solid, deteriorated as the game progressed. Their tackling was ineffective and their covering shockingly inadequate.

Medal of the day goes to Halesowen’s Ron Dugmore. He hit 7 goals and deserved every one. His distribution was tip-top, his shooting accurate and powerful. During the second half he just strolled through the Dudley defence with ease. A just reward, therefore, that he should score the 10th goal.

For the 1955/56 season. the Birmingham League Southern Division comprised:

Redditch, Lockheed Leamington, Worcester City, Brierley Hill, Banbury Spencer, Bromsgrove Rovers, Kidderminster Harriers, Stourbridge, Rugby, Lye, Halesowen, Moor Green, Cheltenham, Symingtons, Cradley Heath, Hereford Utd, Sutton Town, Dudley, Aston Villa, Boldmere St. Michaels.
