Brush With Fame

When the fanzine first started I tried to get some publicity for it in the local press. The Halesowen News strung me along and, after having asked me to send them a copy, ignored me. In stark contrast the Halesowen Chronicle got straight back to me and came round to my house to ask a few questions. They even let me have a picture of my dog in the paper.
The story below is what eventually appeared. There are a number of inaccuracies (particularly with regard to how many I had sold at the time) but it doesn't matter.

Mag for true fans by Laura Blyth

A devoted football fan from Halesowen has launched his very own magazine dedicated to his beloved Yeltz.
Dan Simner, of Hopwood Close, has just finished putting together the first edition of Bright Golden Haze, a fanzine dedicated to Halesowen Town.
The magazine, which costs £1, is being sold at the Yeltz Bar at Halesowen's ground The Grove, and also the Waggon & Horses pub in Stourbridge Road.
Dan, aged 37, started writing the fanzine two months ago and has already sold about 100 copies. He is planning to donate all the money from sales to the club.
Dan, who is a season ticket holder, said he felt proud when he completed the magazine.
"It was a very proud moment for me when I saw the finished article," he said.
"I only started writing it about two months ago and it was great to see the final copy.
"I decided to create a magazine for the fans because there hadn't been one for about four years.
"I became a big fan of the club about four years ago and go to all the home games and some away matches.
"I'm hoping to get other fans involved so they can write their own columns and add their views on the club.
"At the minute I print the magazine from my home, but if it becomes popular with the fans I might look for sponsorship from local businesses.
"I would like to do an interview with a different Yeltz player every month."
The first edition of Bright Golden Haze features an interview with American midfielder Jay Denny, a run-down of the clubs in Halesowen's league and a look back at the play-off heartache of last season.
Dan also runs a Halesowen Town fansite at www.brightgoldenhaze.co.uk where copies of the magazine can be bought.
